Amazon set to buy property in Redding’s Stillwater Business Park

After negotiating with the city for several months, Amazon is ready to purchase land to build a distribution center in Redding’s Stillwater Business Park.
The City Council on Tuesday will consider approving a purchase and sale agreement with Amazon.com Service LLC for 34 acres in the city-owned park, which is northeast of Redding Regional Airport.
Amazon is expected to buy lot 11B for approximately $2.5 million, according to the staff report to council members.
There, the mega e-commerce company would build a 95,000-square-foot distribution plant that would serve Redding and surrounding communities, the staff report says.
Terms of the deal include:
- A refundable deposit of $50,000
- An inspection and due diligence period of 180 days, with the option to extend the inspection period up to five additional 30-day periods, each coming with a nonrefundable $15,000 extension fee.
- The sale would close on or before 30 days following the due diligence and inspection period.
Shasta Economic Development Corp. President Rebecca Baer said her organization is excited Amazon is coming to Redding.
“We are eager to see what their plans are for the site and look forward to working with them on securing more jobs and economic opportunity for our region. The Stillwater Business Park has been a focus area for regional industrial growth and it is promising to see a commitment of this level come to fruition,” Baer said in an email to the Record Searchlight.
Lot 11B is 57 acres at the south end of the city-owned park on Venture Parkway. The site is next to the lot that the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection purchased a few years ago. Cal Fire wants to build a new regional facility in the business park, but work on the project has yet to start.
Amazon would have the first right of refusal for five years for the remaining 22 acres of the property under the terms of the agreement with the city.
“We’re always exploring the possibility of opening operations facilities — from small to large in scale ― in communities across the U.S. Nothing is finalized in Redding, and we’ll share more if additional progress is made and we have something confirmed to announce,” Amazon spokesman Steve Kelly said in an email.
The company operates a number of fulfillment centers around the world, including many in California. Employees at the centers receive, pack and ship customer orders.
Amazon has 59 fulfillment and sortation centers and 62 delivery stations in California, according to its economic impact report.
